All the Best From This Rockin' City on this Rollin' River
This page is devoted to the musical ooze that seeps from every pore of this steamy fertile delta land. Memphis...the Center of the Musical Universe...the Home of the Blues...the Birthplace of Rock'n'Roll...the Place Where Nothing Ever Happens, and the Impossible Always Does. And if you are chosen to be seduced into this vortex of raw and powerful energy disguised as a one-horse river town, then I offer my humble-yet-well-founded observations of where you might like to find yourself, or who you might like to find yourself talking to.
A Few Places You Don't Want to Miss
IF YOU'RE HUNGRY: Anderton's on Madison Avenue. The waitresses all got matching T-Shirts last month. It was the first major change the restaurant has made in 50 years. Food like grandma made, and usually grandma's serving you. IF OU WANT A CUP OF COOL: Java Cabana on Young Avenue. The 25 Elvis Shrine is one of my favorite sights of the city. IF YOU WANT A CUP OF EXOTIC: Otherlands on Cooper Street. IF YOU WANT TO BUY SOME SOUND Shangri-La on Madison Avenue IF YOU WANT TO HEAR SOME SOUND AND GET A REAL DRINK Murphy's (see below) IF YOU WANT TO CUT A RECORD Go to Ardent Studio on Madison and tell 'em you're looking for Jim Dickinson. HOODOO PAM McGAHA BE CHECKIN' OUT THESE DAZE That would have to be Zach Myers, the 15 year old wonderkid, who disappeared into his bedroom with a used guitar his daddy gave him for his 10th birthday. Two years later he emerged and said he was "ready to play". And play he has. After sitting in with dozens of veterans in the blues bars of Beale Street and the smoky joints of Midtown, he's now formed his own group. Having watched him perform on numerous occasions with the likes of Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Anthony Corder, it should be very interesting to watch him strut his stuff his way. The kid's definitely not afraid of the blues.
Good Advice from StranjBrew
If you never heed another word I say, hear this: Eric Gales and Anthony Corder are at Murphy's, a little joint on Madison Avenue at Avalon, across from the Piggly Wiggly (another story), every Thursday night. The music doesn't crank up 'til late (12:30), but believe me when I tell you it's worth the wait. It doesn't get any better than this: Black and white and a moan and a wail, and two world class bluesmen play off of each other like the sun and the moon.
